Cités (Cities)

Video Installation

Video installation comprising two simultaneous looped videos on either side of a wall located in the centre of the exhibition space.

Materials: two DVD players; two video projectors; poured concrete chair; solid steel tubes; gypsum board wall; white paint
Size: Projections: 300 cm x 400 cm. Wall: 300 cm x 400 cm x 60 cm
Size: Projections: 270 cm x 360 cm. Volumes: 270 cm x 360 cm x 60 cm

Metal blocks are layed out in the video’s field of projection; the oversized shadows they create on the screen are reminiscent of skyscrapers. The projected shadows are layered onto another projection on the same screen, a video of my shadow that moves, passes, stops and looks. The combination of blocks and video contextualizes the shadow of the walker, a flâneur in an imaginary urban environment. The third equally essential component of Cités is the shadow of the viewer, which is also projected onto this illusory urban landscape. The viewer moves among the blocks in the exhibition space and finds himself along with the flâneur in a two-dimensional city located on the projection screen. The walker’s time becomes that of the imagination.

This video installation is designed to reveal another type of image, which is not linked to the medium and which is “virtual” rather than video. In constant transformation, the image does not correspond to predetermined dimensions or modes of representation. The viewer moves inside an image that is not seen or represented. In a certain way, he walks through the material image of the video.
